Today I learned about China’s punishment system from the perspective of a Chinese immigrant. For instance, this individual told me that, if you commit a crime in China, “even if you are white collar”, either you are educated and reformed (usually through labor) or you are shot. Other sources (like this) seem to confirm his description. According to this article, “China is frequently criticized for its abusive penal system,” and according to this report, “Thousands of people were executed in China in 2011, more than the rest of the world put together. Figures on the death penalty are a state secret. Amnesty International has stopped publishing figures it collects from public sources in China as these are likely to grossly underestimate the true number.”
Today I meditated for 15 minutes.
Today I acted compassionately by seeing that an old lady was struggling on the icy sidewalks and so holding her hand while walking her the rest of the way to her doctor’s appointment.
